WHY DID HUNGARY BECOME THE MAIN CRUSADER OF EUROPE

par samir 16 Février 2019, 01:18

On the eve of the elections to the European Parliament, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban again raised the stakes in his war with the European Union. According to him, Brussels wants to destroy European nationalism, settling the continent with Muslim migrants, so Budapest must take the defense of Christianity.

For several centuries, Hungary and the Czech Republic have been part of one state, but from a social point of view they can be perceived as antagonists.

The Czechs are one of the most atheistic peoples of the continent (this is a consequence of the Hussite Wars), which, after the collapse of the ATS, revealed liberalism uncharacteristic by the standards of Eastern Europe, whether it concerns sexual minorities, prostitution or soft drugs. Hungarians, on the contrary, are the bastion of nationalism, religiosity and "traditional values".

True, it does not seem to be reflected in their capitals. If Prague is a quiet town, then Budapest is a Mecca of young European party-goers with all the ensuing infrastructural consequences.

In general, it is not surprising that Hungary is now claiming to be the “best crusader of the EU”, and even the “main defender of Christians” on the continent, where, by the way, the Pope himself lives.

On Monday, Prime Minister Viktor Orban again called on the European Union to "protect Christian values from migrants" - "Muslim invaders." And, even more significant, he accused Brussels of imposing a “new internationalism” through encouraging migration.

Hungary became a real national state thanks to Victor Orban.

Formerly, the Fides Party was a typical liberal pro-Western party, but over time Orban, one of its founders, turned it towards right-wing conservatism. Soon between Brussels and Orban an open conflict broke out, which is still going on. At its center are the provisions of the new Hungarian constitution.

The previous one was adopted in the 1940s, subsequently providing a lot of amendments. In the new main document, Hungary is considered as a defender of the interests of all Hungarians regardless of their citizenship (therefore, foreign Hungarian diasporas have the right to vote in national elections). It is emphasized that the people of Hungary are united by “God and Christianity”, that marriage is a “union of a man and a woman” and that life begins from the moment of conception, and the state is assigned the duty of “protecting life”.

Hungarians themselves in the conflict between their prime minister and the European bureaucracy ardently side with Orban, perceiving him as a defender of national interests. In the 2014 elections, Fides gained 66.83%, and another 11.56% received radical nationalists from the Jobbik party.

However, one should not think that Orban’s increased popularity is due only to his statements about God and the defense against migrants. He has vigorous economic growth and many social projects.

For example, he returned free higher education and helped mortgage holders to deal with debt bondage that arose after the financial crisis and the sharp rise in the value of the Swiss franc (at his request franc loans were transferred to forint at a preferential rate). And in the framework of the same speech, in which he condemned “international Brussels”, he promised to introduce his own analogue of maternity capital in the country, as well as to issue a loan of more than 30 thousand euros for any Hungarian who marries for the first time (after the birth of children, the amount of payments is removed decreases, and if many children are born, the credit will be fully written off).

At the same time, it is obvious that this role of the all-European crusader is flattering the Hungarians, so the premier’s ambitions find a hot response among them. For historical reasons, this nation is characterized not only by nationalism, expressed in touching attention to traditions and honoring the very idea of independence, but also by some imperial claims.

As a result, the battle of Orban with one of his worst enemies - an active supporter of globalism, George Soros (this financier was born in Budapest and does not forget about his small homeland) was lost to the last outright.

And we have to admit that Hungary is suitable for the role of the “EU Christian

For a more successful opposition to Brussels on migration issues, the countries of Eastern and Central Europe made a special club called the Visegrad Group. In addition to Hungary, it also includes Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. However, the Czechs, although they do not like migrants from the south, cannot claim the title of Christian stronghold - the majority of the population positions itself as atheists.

Slovakia for the same role is not sufficiently secured and influential. Poland remains, which also considers itself a conservative Christian stronghold. But the very idea of Polish nationalism is inseparable from the orientation towards the Catholic Church, whereas the pathos of Orban is general Christian. This is due primarily to the fact that more than half of Hungarians are Roman Catholics, and Orban is a Protestant Calvinist, like 15% of the population. Naturally, in his picture the Hungarians in the nation are united not by a specific church, but by Christianity as such.

The only problem is that Budapest has neither financial, nor organizational, nor political opportunities to “protect European Christianity” outside the Hungarian communities.

But, as a stubborn and ideological nationalist, Orban has become a wiry piece for the Brussels bureaucracy, and this is already splitting the notorious "European unity."
